URL Shorteners and SEO
Redirect types, canonical signals and indexation rules for short links.
Published 2026-08-26 · Updated 2026-09-18Redirects are signals
Search engines interpret redirects in context. Permanent 301 and 308 responses usually communicate a durable move; 302 and 307 communicate that the redirect may change. Choose semantics according to the link’s real lifecycle, not a blanket SEO myth.
Keep redirect URLs out of the index
A short redirect URL does not provide standalone search value. Exclude redirect routes from XML sitemaps and send noindex directives where appropriate. Publish useful, canonical landing pages separately.
Avoid redirect chains
Each additional hop adds latency and another failure point. Short links should resolve directly to the current canonical destination, and teams should audit campaigns after destination migrations.
